![]() And, no surprise, before he became a Disney mascot, Johnny Depp is real entertaining here. With that said, it still falls in line with Tim Burton's visual style and approach to cinematography in his movies. ![]() It should be obvious to any fan of Hammer films that parts of this film were obviously tributes. ![]() It, obviously, pays tribute to Hammer films in this approach. The cinematography is also fantastic, like a dark Gothic horror film come to life. So, for me, that part of the film holds up better than even films that came out in the last five years. And the actual editing for when the horseman, or anyone else for that matter, cuts the heads off of people looks excellent. Not in this film, the heads look eerily similar to the actors, to the point where it's almost creepy to see them. Usually in horror movies, when they show the severed head, it looks absolutely nothing like the actor portraying them. Granted the film did cost $100 million to make, so they'd have more money to make it look better, but even with that, the movie's decapitations and decapitated heads look pretty fantastic. One of the things that I must say is that the gore and practical special effects look absolutely fantastic, even 16-17 years after the fact. I will say that, while this movie probably doesn't hold up as well, I had a lot of fun going back and revisiting this movie. Anyway, for some reason, I had a desire to watch this movie again. I must have been 11 or so at the time when I went to saw it. I seem to remember seeing parts of it on TV, but I did actually go see this movie in the theaters. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie. Nice annual tradition to watch around Halloween. But, overall it's a lesser effort from Burton but still one of his best and most enjoyable if you don't pick apart some liberties he took with the story. 15-20 minutes leaner might have been a wise move. It's alot of fun but seems to go on a bit too long and overstay its welcome. Lots of nice images of spooky jack-o-laterns, misty fields and wet marshlands. I enjoy this movie a great deal, if mostly for the near-perfect set decoration, atmosphere and mood. We rarely see him, except in very brief glimpses of head-chopping and off he goes on his dark pony. And honestly, Burton could have made better use of Christopher Walken, who is reduced to a fairly inconsequential role. Depp is fun as Crane, although Ricci is a bit miscast as the object of his affection. The acting is fine, if a bit silly at times, but this is actually a lighter mystery than conventional horror or gothic ghost story. Mostly it's about the set decoration which consists of the entire town of Sleepy Hollow, built from the ground up to meet Director Tim Burton's vision of what Sleepy Hollow should look like. An awkward romance and a somewhat convoluted third act prevent it from being flawless, but it's more than just your average horror entertainment.Įxcellent atmospheric thriller is both fun and funny while being fairly frightening in some spots. It has his distinguished tone and style with plenty of colorful kills by one of the great horror villains of all time, the headless horseman. He's done a few horror films, but Sleepy Hollow ranks up there with some of his best overall features. With that said, once we get caught up as an audience, Burton gives us a juicy climatic showdown with the infamous horseman, and it doesn't disappoint. But the real issue with some of the mystery is that the third act reveals come at a rapid pace and the story gets a little convoluted. Crane, in typical Burton fashion, is a bit of an eccentric and unpredictable twist to his detective style. A good portion of the film focuses on why exactly a headless horseman is taking out certain members of the Sleepy Hollow community, with Johnny Depp's Ichabod Crane at the center of the investigation. And he handles it well for the most part. Speaking of the mystery, It's nice to see Burton tackle a mystery, which I believe is the only time he's ever ventured into that genre. I love the way he and Burton used the town itself as a character which is a part of the mystery. Sleepy Hollow is a much more habited town, but the same eerie tone is set brilliantly by cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki. To me, the creepiest film of 2016 has been The Witch, and that's large part due to the eerie 17th century setting on a secluded farm. ![]() Period pieces are ripe for great horror flicks. It's easily one of Tim Burton's most entertaining adventures to date. Sleepy Hollow manages to impressively balance out a brutally graphic premise with an interesting mystery and decidedly timely humor. ![]()

Instead she is complicated – fighting a deep repressed sense of regret with a strict view of the world as black and white. But in that way, I think Ng did a fantastic job with her. While I understood Elena’s character, she was a person I found difficult to like. And in Pearl I saw myself – the determination, the understanding, and the kindness. She was fierce, compassionate, and incredibly misunderstood. Izzy almost became this silent underdog of my affection. I understood the difficulty of Izzy’s life – surrounded by people who do not understand her. ![]() Mia is incredibly insightful not only about art, but also life. In Mia I saw her resilience, her strength of spirit, and I loved seeing her backstory told through her perspective. I absolutely loved the characters of Mia, Pearl, and Elena’s daughter Izzy. At the same time, there’s the very real issue of ethnicity that I briefly talk about above). There’s this tension between those in the community who believe they’re above race, while still feeling as if they are being ‘compassionate’ to those below them by throwing them the bones. (Additionally, I found the argument of ‘not seeing race’ to be particularly insightful in this book. Not only is this a factor in the adoption debate, but a beam of light is shed on this aspect through a side character. ![]() A lot of what I was able to find, was fetishized, or how Western culture interpreted Chinese culture. I remember it was a huge deal in my house because the American Doll Company had no Asian ‘American Girl’. Even growing up, I felt the same struggles of finding dolls or books that reflected who I am. Culture ErasureĪnother moving topic that Ng deals with is the subtle racism still prevalent in American culture – the way the Asian identity is erased. (Not to mention the utter irony of the singular responsibility of women to ‘know better’ about having children, as if accidents or other parties were not involved). We expect mothers to ‘raise their children better’ (or what they mean by this is raise their daughters better so that they do not become mothers themselves), and infallible, magically able to make anything work, even if they are desperately poor and have a moment of doubt. We are also asked who defines an (un)fit mother/family? Is it about our circumstances now or does it apply to our potential? In this space of debate, Ng encourages a discussion about the pressures and responsibilities we put on mothers. Ng asks us if there is something essential about the connection between a mother and a child, if nurture could erase this bond. The last categorization of mothers is incredibly touching to me, because it interacts with the adoption narrative – which is extremely personal to me. We see those who do not wish to become mothers, those who desperately desire children, and even those who deemed ‘unacceptable’ mothers. Ng masterfully weaves us a narrative that examines the idea of motherhood under a magnifying glass and from many angles. What I loved so much about this book had to be the discussion of motherhood. I took three pages of notes on this book, so to say I loved it and it made me think is an understatement. Even more so, Elena and Mia seem to be on rivaling sides. When a pair of family friends of the Richardsons try to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle breaks forth that divides families and puts the town at opposition with itself. Not only does she have a dangerous secret, but she does not mind rocking the boat. However, Mia is different from most others in Shaker Heights. Soon all four Richardson children are drawn to the pair, attaching like barnacles or in love. ![]() Mia is an artist and single mother, who rents the Richardson’s duplex. But she never could have expected Mia Warren and her daughter to not only shake the foundations of their community, but to change her family forever. The Richardson matriarch, Elena, has lived by this principle. They plan what color your houses can be, based on the style, how tall your lawn may grow, and what the houses look like from the outside. Little Fires Everywhere is a must read for anyone who is a mother, would like to become a mother, or is interested in a careful exploration of what motherhood means. As an adopted Chinese-American, I underestimated the pull it would have for me. Little Fires Everywhere touched me deeply in its discussion of motherhood and adoption (in many forms). ![]() ![]() Widowmaker is capable of one-shotting Mercy from anywhere on the map. Do new games have any right to stand alongside their forebears that paved the way and have stood the test of time? What’s really important?
